“Thou art the Christ”

Conversion on the Way to Damascus-Caravaggio

Both Peter and Paul had recorded moments of confession of their recognition of who Jesus truly is.

Peter said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Paul said, “Who art thou, Lord?” (“Paul” is the Roman version of the Hebrew name, “Saul”.)

Acts 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Paul recognized that Jesus is Lord.

Peter recognized Jesus while he was on the earth before the crucifixion.

Paul, who never met Jesus prior to the crucifixion, encountered the resurrected Lord Jesus after Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection.

Both men came to the same conclusion.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
