Judges 16:20 Samson knew not that the Lord left him

Samson - Tissot, artist

When Jesus was on the earth, some received Him and his message. Some were expecting a different kind of Messiah.

When Jesus healed and delivered people on the sabbath, Pharisees accused him.

Matthew 9:33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.

34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

The character of Jesus is revealed in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapters 5-7. It is revealed throughout the whole Word of God, but if there is confusion, the Sermon on the Mount is a good place to start.

Here are just a very few scriptures. It is recommended to find a hard copy of a Bible or an online Bible and read Matthew 5, 6, and 7 for yourself.

Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Matthew 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Jesus is the Word made flesh. He is the living embodiment of the Word.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

In not comprehending Jesus, Jesus has been depicted as some kind of a crusader. Does that match the Sermon on the Mount?

When he came to earth in His first coming, one of the reasons he was rejected by some was because they expecting a conquering warrior. He came as a suffering Savior (Isaiah chapter 53). As he entered into the events that led to his crucifixion, and later resurrection, he said this.

Matthew 26:53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

Jesus had all power. He did not use it to save himself as he was the sacrifice for the sin of mankind.

Getting confused about the nature of Jesus can lead to presumption. It can lead to presuming that any prayer can be prayed and that it will be answered. But prayer comes out of relationship, right relationship with God.

Things depend on covenant, obedience, relationship.

Jeremiah 7:16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee.

Ezekiel 14:20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

There are those who would say, that is Old Testament, but there is this in the New Testament.

Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

We are in for some chastening, as the United States, under the current leadership, despite resistance and pushback by some of the citizenry, has flaunted the Constitution, international law, and diplomacy.

Samson, in the Old Testament, was anointed. But he disobeyed God, and finally that disobedience led to the Lord leaving him and consequently, he was captured by the enemy.

Judges 16:20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.

21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.
